A Daughter’s Pie Adventures in Michigan

You know CurvyMama pretty well by now, so you know that she sees nearly everything in life through a pie lens. And so it is that I bring you a little slice of my younger daughter’s summer road trip. It’s true that Sara and her friend Ariel did not set out to find great pie between Washington D.C. and Michigan. They had other goals in mind (two big music festivals, camping, seeing friends).

But they fell under my spell, and happened to end up in the middle of the biggest cherry festival in North America. (Okay, maybe that wasn’t my doing. It was just a stroke of good luck.) They also happened to be right near one of the Pie Shops On Our List, and were happy to oblige when I asked them to go sample its wares.

Take a look at a couple of the things Sara and Ariel tasted at Achatz Handmade Pie Company in Beverly Hills, Mich.

Michigan 4-Berry Pie

Caramel apple pie

The day before this lovely side trip, the girls wandered through the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City, Mich. A half-million visitors attend the festival every summer, and I’ve always wanted to be one of them. But my daughter got there first, lucky dog! Take a look at what I missed:

They also managed to get to another nearby pie place, Grand Traverse Pie Company. That didn’t go so badly, either.

Cherry crumb

Cherry pie with lemon frozen custard. Not bad.

Note to self: Get your sorry butt to Michigan next year.
